Matthew Donohue to referee Walsall away clash

10 January 2019

Matthew Donohue will be the man in the middle for the Iron's away league clash against Walsall on Saturday.

The Manchester-based official will travel to the Banks's Stadium for his 25th game of the campaign and seventh in Sky Bet League One. The current campaign is Donohue's first in the EFL.

His first game of the campaign was a League Two affair between Colchester United and Port Vale which the hosts won 2-0. On that day, he issued four yellow cards.

Meanwhile, his most recent league game saw him show two yellow cards in Mansfield Town's 1-0 away victory over Grimsby Town in which former midfielder Neal Bishop scored the winner for the Stags. In midweek, he oversaw the Checkatrade Trophy encounter between Accrington Stanley and Bury. He showed two yellow cards as the Shakers came from 2-0 down to win 4-2.

In recent seasons, he has gone from strength-to-strength with three successive promotions. Spending just one season at Level 2B (National League North) and another at Level 2A (National League) he has shown just how much he has developed his skills in the lead up to his promotion to the EFL at the end of last season.

The Primary School teacher is yet to take charge of either side, so Saturday will be his first involvement in a Scunthorpe and Walsall fixture.

In 2017-18, he took charge of 20 games, issuing 47 yellow cards and two reds. So far in this campaign, he has officiated in 23 encounters, showing 78 yellows and four red cards.

On Saturday, he will be assisted by Ian Smedley and Danny Gratton, while Alix Pashley has been appointed as the fourth official.
