Stuart McCall receives January nomination

6 February 2019

Iron manager Stuart McCall has been nominated for the Sky Bet League One manager of the month accolade for January.

It’s the 54-year-old’s first nomination as United boss since taking charge of the side in late-August.

The nomination comes following an unbeaten month to open 2019, which included four wins and a draw. Scunthorpe recorded away wins at Peterborough United (W2-0), Walsall (W2-1) and Fleetwood Town (W1-0) along with a home win over Coventry City (W2-1). The draw came at home to Sunderland (D1-1) and despite the Iron's equaliser coming late on in the tie, the side could've arguably taken maximum points from the month.

Also nominated are Derek Adams of Plymouth Argyle, Charlton Athletic’s Lee Bowyer and the Luton Town interim manager Mick Harford.

The judging panel comprises former Ipswich Town manager George Burley, Sky Sports’ EFL League expert Don Goodman; EFL Senior Media Manager Rob Meaden, League Managers’ Association Director Olaf Dixon and Sky Bet EFL Trader Ivor Davies.

Here's what they had to say about each manager:

Derek Adams (Plymouth Argyle)

Has an uncanny ability to build momentum through a season. Managed a pre-Christmas injury crisis at Home Park and reaped the rewards in January with four wins from five games to lift his side out of the relegation places.

Lee Bowyer (Charlton Athletic)

Has put together a side which is built from the back and manages games superbly. Just two goals were conceded in five January games which yielded 11 points and moved Bowyer’s side closer to the automatic promotion places.

Mick Harford (Luton Town)

After Nathan Jones left for Stoke, Harford drove the Luton juggernaut to the top of League One. His genius was to tinker only mildly, gaining 10 points from four games, including fixtures against promotion rivals Sunderland, Peterborough and Portsmouth.

Stuart McCall (Scunthorpe United)

When his side lost six straight games up to December 29th, scoring just a single goal in the process, others might have panicked. Not McCall, whose trust in his methods and belief in his players were rewarded with 13 points from a possible 15.

The winners will be announced on Friday, February 8, 2019 at 6am.
