Gilliead reacts to goal award and previews derby clash

20 December 2019

Winger Alex Gilliead has provided his reaction after winning the Sky Bet League Two goal of the month award for November following his spectacular effort against Leyton Orient.

The 23-year-old has scored four goals so far this term, and is looking to continue his contributions to Scunthorpe’s climb up the table.

Talking about the award, he told iFollow Iron: “I’m over the moon. It’s always nice to be recognised for goals and, as I’ve said before, I need to be scoring goals and getting assists too. Whether it’s good ones like against Leyton Orient or whether it’s a tap in, I don’t mind so long as they go in.

“With it going into the top corner, it was probably the best goal I’ve scored but I also caught the one against Forest Green sweetly (three weeks later). I’m just happy to be recognised for it, and hopefully there’s more to come.”

Gilliead will be looking to make it eight league games unbeaten for the Iron with victory over Grimsby Town at Blundell Park on Saturday.

He added: “We’re all in good spirits and playing well at the minute. Everyone’s looking forward to the game with it being a local derby, but we’ll focus on ourselves and what we’re doing well at the minute, and take it from there.

“We’re just treating it like a typical game. It is a derby but it’s a team fighting for three points and that’s what we’ll going into it looking for too because we want to keep climbing the league.”

A full capacity away following will be backing the Iron at the weekend, and Gilliead appreciates the backing. He said: “It’s always good to have the fans there enjoying the football. We just want to put on a show for them and make sure we’re doing them proud, and get the points.

“There’s a good group of lads there all fighting for the same thing. We all want to do well, and will take it a game at a time. There are a lot of matches coming up thick and fast, and we just have to keep it going. It’s a good team to be playing in.”
