Winger Regan Slater was pleased with how he fared in his first competitive fixture for the Iron, despite the result in the defeat to Swindon Town.

Pay on the gate at Cheltenham Town

He told iFollow Iron: “That’s the most minutes I’ve played (for a while). I came off in the 84th minute and nearly got 90 into the legs at the weekend, so that aspect was good.

“The gaffer said beforehand the first 20 minutes will hit you. It’s a lot to take in. It’s a bit different when the first (proper) game comes.”

The Sheffield United loanee might have only been at the club for a week prior to the start of the season but felt he gelled well with his new teammates.

Slater said: “I’m still getting to know players and how the gaffer wants everyone to play but so far, so good. The lads and staff are great.”

The 19-year-old insisted his side learned plenty from the clash with the Robins last week.

“It was silly things,” he added. “We got done on the counter twice which shouldn’t happen. People are a bit rusty and it’s the first game of the season. We need to make sure that doesn’t happen again.

“I could’ve helped out a bit more for the goals, positioning-wise. I could’ve got on the ball a bit more but overall, it was a steady game. I hope to do better at the weekend.”

He is now looking ahead to Saturday to make amends as the Iron take on Cheltenham Town at Jonny-Rocks Stadium.

He concluded: “We know they’re a big team, set-play wise. It’s all on us, how we start the game and play.

“We understand that it’s not the be all and end all but it would have been nice to get off to a winning start. No one likes losing. It’s gone now and we look forward to the weekend.

“We’ll bounce back from it.”
