Burgess: Win lifts us

12 November 2018

Defender Cameron Burgess believes the win against Burton Albion in the Emirates FA Cup has given the Iron a massive lift.

United beat their League One opponents 2-1 to progress to the second round of the competition and Burgess thought it was a solid performance defensively.

Speaking to iFollow Iron, the 23-year-old said: “It would have been nice to get a clean sheet, but it is equally as nice to get a win.

“We defended really well for the most part, but we were playing against a good in-form team.

“They had Liam Boyce up front, who is a good striker and scored a lot of goals throughout his career.

“We were ready for that. The boys up front did their job and got us two goals.”

Burgess is also hoping that the team go further in the competition due to the impact it can have on league performances.

“Teams in the past have done really well in the league because they have got their confidence after a good cup run,” said Burgess. “Hopefully we can go further in the cup.”

He added: “It was a cup-tie so we had to go through and we did that.

“It makes it a bit special because we have been off form recently and Burton have been on form.

“We did our jobs and I think it was a good performance.

“It is a massive lift because we have got the monkey off the back with the win. We need to carry to carry this on Tuesday and then on Saturday.”

The Iron remain in cup action on Tuesday night when they take on Mansfield Town away in their final Checkatrade Trophy match.

On that contest, Burgess said: “It is not going to be an easy match, but hopefully we can build on what we did against Burton.”
