We continue our series of interviews with Iron manager Nick Daws, as he reacts to last week’s first summer signing, with Olufela Olomola arriving at Glanford Park.

The 20-year-old former Southampton striker put pen to paper, agreeing a three-year deal with the club. Speaking to iFollow Iron in depth on a number of topics, the United boss' attention turned to his first recruit of the close season.

ON OLOMOLA’S ARRIVAL…

ND: Like all good recruitment departments up and down the country, we are monitoring players on a daily basis throughout the season and throughout multiple seasons. ‘Fela has got immense talent and he’s come through Arsenal’s system before moving onto Southampton’s system - two incredible academies. Southampton, in particular, have got a real reputation for developing players. He’s had a little taste of it there and he’s been a successful player at their U23-level.

ON HIS LEAGUE EXPERIENCE AT YEOVIL...

ND: He’s gone away to Yeovil to get his first experience of a club similar to us in terms of size and stature, albeit in different parts of the world, but not too dissimilar. He’s hit the ground running. He’s scored goals, contributed to the team’s performance and he’s now taking what is a brave step to relocate to the north and leave his family behind. We spoke to people about him, we did our due diligence and when I spoke to him I had a clear indication that he was here to get in the team, so that’s the challenge I’ve set him. From his point of view, and from ours, I hope he’ll achieve that sooner rather than later.

ON HIS PEDIGREE…

ND: To all intents and purposes, he will fit in to our profile of what we want from players at that end of the pitch. You’ve saw how we finished the season with a dynamic front four, but Ivan (Toney) has obviously gone back to his parent club. Olu is a different type of player, but he’s dynamic, he’s quick and he’s powerful. He can play off both sides, he can run in behind, stretch the game and cause defenders problems. From then it’s about sticking the ball in the back of the net and he’s proven that at academy level and senior professional development level with the U23s and then he’s proven that at Yeovil. Given the opportunity here and six weeks worth of work during pre-season then we’ve got another good, young and promising player on our hands.
