Report: Iron Under-18s 1-0 Rotherham United Under-18s

17 March 2018

The Iron’s Under-18 side won 1-0 at home against their Rotherham United counterparts on Saturday afternoon.

Scunthorpe took the lead after half-an-hour thanks to a well-worked team goal, finished off by Tom Pugh.

The goal was even more satisfying for the coaching staff, as this week’s training has been focused on combination play. Louis Collins laid the ball off for George Hornshaw, who then played Pugh through on goal. The 17-year-old made a fantastic run to meet the ball and produced an impressive finish.

The Iron’s side (made up of Under-15s, Under-16s, Under-17s and Under-18s players) came up against an older and more physical side in Rotherham.

However, the coaching staff were impressed by their team’s willingness to play with the club’s philosophy in mind and meet the challenge head-on.

The Millers had a spell on top in the second-half but the Iron defended well to protect Adam Kelsey in goal and leave him without too many saves to make.

United are next in action when they travel to Notts County next Saturday (11am kick-off).

TEAM: Kelsey, Baker, Bartholomew, Hornshaw, Barks, Morfoot (Colclough, 25), Allasan, Pugh, L Collins, Kalu (Jessop, 70), Busby (Chadli, 80).
UNUSED SUBS: T Collins, A Train.
