Gilks: Battling for it every step of the way

23 March 2018

Iron goalkeeper Matt Gilks has called for a positive mentality from his teammates ahead of the weekend's encounter against Rochdale.

He spoke to iFollow Iron ahead of facing his former side, where he spent five years as a youth player before seven years as a professional.

ON THE WEEK’S TRAINING…
MG: Obviously, we’ve looked at it (last week’s game) on Monday and Tuesday and there have been certain discussions with certain people. We had a bit of a team meeting on Tuesday where some things were said, but all relative to what we’re trying to achieve. We’ve spoken about it, discussed it and now we’re trying to amend it and we move on.

ON HIS FORMER CLUB ROCHDALE…
MG: It’s another game against another good team coming to Glanford Park. They need three points and we need three points, so it’ll be another tough match. They’re organised, they can score goals and they put bodies on the line, which is what it’s all about, especially in this league. Their FA Cup run was good for them, but it’s back to business for them now. At the end of day, it is business as usual. I put my shirt on and want to win three points for the club I play for. I have fond memories of my time at Rochdale and still get there when I can. It’s disappointing to see them in the position that they’re in because I don’t think they should be.

HEADING INTO THE GAME…
MG: It’s a mentality. We want to go out there and win the game. We need to play smart, defend smart and hopefully we come out on top. To do that, we will have to do what we can at both ends of the pitch. There are eight games to go, but we take one at a time. The results in this league have shown that anybody can beat anybody on their day. It’s whichever team gets and takes their chance. It’s in our hands and believe me, we will be fighting for it every step of the way.
