Doubles from Olufela Olomola, Stephen Humphrys and Kyle Wootton, plus earlier goals from Duane Holmes and Lee Novak, sealed the victory at West Street.
Daws took plenty of encouragement from the performance, and told iFollow Iron: “You always want to win football matches and we did that quite handsomely today. The approach and commitment to everything in and out of possession was exactly what we were looking for.
“It’s what we’ve been working on and it was nice to see it put into operation during a game. Further down the line, we’ll have more testing opposition and will have to do it against them, but it was two pleasing sets of 45 minutes.”
Scoring always provides a boost to the confidence of forwards, and Daws was pleased to see the club’s frontmen get off the mark for pre-season.
“They’re strikers and live and die by scoring goals,” he added. “They (Olomola, Humphrys and Wootton) played as a fluid three in the second-half and were a bit looser than the first-half team, which was more structured to how we played at the back end of last season.
“When you come into a club you look to make an impact, so for those boys (Olomola and Humphrys) to score two goals, as well as Kyle, was great.”
Neither Josh Morris and Funso Ojo were involved on Saturday, and Daws explained: “They’ve both got injuries and we’ll reveal more in terms of what they are later on. It was disappointing for them to miss out because they’ve both been excellent so far in pre-season, but it’s important we look after our players in the long-term and not put them at risk too much for a short-term gain.”
Preparations for the new campaign will continue next week, with the second friendly of pre-season seeing United visit Alfreton Town on Friday night.
