Report: Iron Under-18s 2-2 Doncaster Rovers Under-18s

20 January 2018

The Iron’s Under-18 side drew 2-2 at home to their Doncaster Rovers counterparts on Saturday morning.

Scunthorpe went ahead through two excellent goals. The first came in the opening half through Ewan Train, who cut in on his left foot and bent the ball into the top corner from 25 yards. He has shown in training he can score goals like that and it was great to see him do that in a game situation.

The other goal was a George Hornshaw effort during the second-half. A corner was cleared to the edge of the box and he showed great technique to score from 20 yards.

The visitors came back through a penalty, which was felt to be a harsh decision, and their second arrived via a free-kick which United didn’t deal with as quickly as Doncaster did.

Overall, a draw was the fair result. In patches, Scunthorpe played some really good stuff and also defended well at other times because their visitors also played well and caused problems.

Also, when momentum wasn’t in the Iron's favour, they stayed switched on and stuck to the game plan. All week, the Under-18 coaching staff have been telling the players to stick to what they do, and they showed belief and commitment to that throughout the game.

There was plenty to learn for the young players, who are next in action when they visit Bradford City next weekend (11am kick-off).
