15 January 2018

Centre-back Charlie Goode thought Portsmouth offered a difficult test in the Iron’s 1-1 draw at Fratton Park, but he was happy his side kept their unbeaten run going.

United were behind at half time, however an early strike in the second half from Kevin van Veen levelled the scores.

Goode spoke to iFollow Iron about his defensive performance, the game and that equalising goal.

ON THE 1-1 DRAW…
CG: It was a tough game because they are a good side and were quite direct at times. I think in the first half we didn’t start and play how we wanted to. We stayed in the game and in the second half we dominated for large spells. We could have nicked all three points in the end so it is disappointing, but it keeps the unbeaten run going.

ON WHAT CHANGED GOING INTO THE SECOND HALF…
CG:
We had to be a little bit more on the front foot and to be more composed. We were a lot more of a threat when we came out. We had chances very early on and Kev (Kevin van Veen) scored a really great goal. Then we were looking to get three points.

"It is a really hard place to go to because it was a big crowd. I think a lot of clubs would drop points, but it is a point which will go towards our tally."

ON GETTING A POINT AT FRATTON PARK…
CG: It is a really hard place to go to because it was a big crowd. I think a lot of clubs would drop points, but it is a point which will go towards our tally.

ON CONFIDENCE WITHIN THE SQUAD…
CG: We are always confident. We go into every game looking for three points. We haven’t quite got that on the day, but we are still looking good.

ON HIS DEFENSIVE PERFORMANCE…
CG: As a defender, my main job is stop the goals. I have to get my head on it, body in front of it and that is just part of being a centre back. I will keep doing that.

ON KEVIN VAN VEEN’S GOAL…
CG: It was a brilliant strike, he took it very well. He is so composed in front of goal now and he is on a really good run. You can see the quality he has got when he is on the ball. He got us back in the game.

ON RORY WATSON MAKING HIS LEAGUE DEBUT…
CG: He did really well. He has had to wait patiently because Matt Gilks has been in brilliant form, but he is a young goalie with a really good future in front of him.

ON THE IRON’S NEXT MATCH AGAINST GILLINGHAM…
CG: Our home form has been good of late, so we will be looking to get back to winning ways.
