📹 iFollow: Ivan Toney speaks following his Fleetwood match-winning free-kick

3 February 2018

The striker fired home a well-struck free-kick in the 78th minute to put the Iron back ahead and to help beat Fleetwood Town 3-2 at Highbury Stadium.

After the match, Toney reacted to iFollow Iron on his goal, the performance and what he wants from the rest of the season.

ON NETTING THE WINNING GOAL…
IT: I’m buzzing to have got on the scoresheet. The main thing is we have come here and got the three points.

ON HIS FREE-KICK STRIKE…
IT: I got bullied off the first few! I wasn’t getting bullied off this one – I had a good feeling and I managed to put it into the back of the net. The goalkeeper gave me a lot to aim at and I was quite surprised, so I just thought that I needed to get it on target with a bit of pace and it would have a good chance of going in.

ON WANTING TO CONTINUE SCORING…
IT: The main thing is to get the three points firstly, but scoring goals and getting assists for the team is a big part I want to be playing in. Hopefully I can keep doing that come the end of the season and we can get where we want to be.

ON THE OVERALL PERFORMANCE…
IT: I thought it went quite well. I managed to get an assist for the penalty and get on the scoresheet. I think we did well but there is room for improvement. We made it a bit hard for ourselves, but we managed to get a winner and come through with the three points. I think we deserved the three points in the end. There was a spell where we were a bit nervous but we managed to get through it.

ON LOOKING TO BUILD SOME FORM…
IT: We had lost a couple of games so coming here and getting the three points is a massive step.

ON THE AIMS FOR THE REST OF THE SEASON…
IT: I think we can get promotion if we keep doing what we are doing. The disappointment we had last year – the boys will not want that again.

ON FINDING IT DIFFICULT AGAINST TEN MEN…
IT: Any footballer will tell you that it is hard to play against ten men. Even though they have an extra man, they do stay tighter and make it hard for you. We had to find a way, and we did, to get the three points.

ON HOW HE IS FEELING…
IT: I am feeling a bit tired, but it was my first 90 minutes in about two months. I’m sure by playing games I will get fitter, stronger and keep scoring some goals.

ON THE IRON FANS…
IT: They were great last year and I am sure they will be great this year. Hopefully, I can repay them by scoring goals.
