The official will travel to the ABAX Stadium for his 23rd game of the campaign and ninth in Sky Bet League One. The current campaign is his third in the EFL.
His first game of the campaign was a League One affair between Oxford United and Fleetwood Town which the visitors won 2-0. On that occasion, he issued four yellow cards. Meanwhile, his latest game of the campaign came at the weekend when he oversaw Walsall's home league encounter against Luton Town. He showed five cautioned in the game which ended 2-2.
Yates is yet to take charge of a Scunthorpe match, despite being in the EFL for two-and-a-half seasons, so the New Year's Day encounter will be his first.
He has taken charge of two Posh fixtures in his career to date, both of which have come on home soil. Peterborough have won on both occasions by a single goal, while he's shown nine yellow cards across both games.
In 2017-18, he took charge of seven games, issuing 24 yellow cards and no reds. So far in this campaign, he has officiated in 22 encounters, showing 70 yellows and three red cards.
On Tuesday, he will be assisted by Marc Wilson and Andrew Aylott, while Alix Pashley has been appointed as the fourth official.
