Report: Iron Under-18s 2-1 Mansfield Town Under-18s

17 August 2018

Half-time substitute Levi Gallimore netted twice for the Iron to fight back and win 2-1 against Mansfield Town.

The first-half saw limited chances for both sides at Brumby Hall and the score read 0-0 at the break.

It was the visitors who took the lead in the game just after 70 minutes when they scored a free-kick from the edge of the box.

However, ten minutes later, Gallimore got down the side and was fouled inside the box to win United a penalty. The substitute took the spot-kick himself and converted it home to equalise.

In the 85th minute, the Stags had a chance to regain their lead when they won themselves a penalty. However, goalkeeper Sam Riches made a superb save from it to keep the score level.

That save proved even more vital when the Iron scored a winner five minutes later. They broke on the counter-attack with Finley Shrimpton, passing to Gallimore, who cut onto his right foot to curl the ball into the top right corner.

That goal secured Scunthorpe’s first win of the season in a tight and scrappy game where they were physically strong.

Professional Phase Development Coach Steve Thornber was particularly pleased with his side’s psychological approach to the game and their determination to get the victory.

Team: Riches, Baker, Train, Harrison, Barks, Morfoot, Pugh, L Collins, Okafor (Gallimore, 46), Jessop (Busby, 80), Silva (Shrimpton, 80).

Substitutes not used: T Collins, Colclough.
