United manager Nick Daws has spoken about the qualities new addition James Perch will add to the squad.

The 32-year-old midfielder penned a two-year deal on Wednesday and has vast experience of playing in the top two divisions of English football, having previously plied his trade with Nottingham Forest, Newcastle United, Wigan Athletic and Queens Park Rangers.

Daws told iFollow Iron: “What we’re getting with James is a really experienced player, and a top professional who has looked after himself very well.

“He brings versatility, which is an advantage, but primarily we’re looking at him to bolster us in the middle of the pitch, where we’ve been lacking in numbers after the losses of Andrew Crofts, Sam Mantom and Neal Bishop.

“He’s played many games in that position before at the top level, in the Premier League, and gives me a little flexibility in the team shape.

“I’m delighted we have brought an experienced body into the building, who has a lot of game understanding, nous and professionalism. He will help the younger players we’ve signed so far in the window.

“He’s in really good shape and spent three weeks of pre-season training with Wigan Athletic. He’s played 70 minutes and two sets of 90 so he’s good to go.

“He will train with us for the first time on Thursday and that’s a decision I need to make ahead of Coventry at the weekend (on whether he’ll make his debut).”
