Wallace: It's become natural very quickly

21 September 2017

During the Iron’s 1-0 win away at Doncaster Rovers, they often found themselves fending off the Rovers frontline - particularly during the home side's last surge of attacks late in the second-half.

However, every one of these was diffused thanks to the confident defensive display which saw Murray Wallace pick up his eighth league appearance of the season.

The 24-year-old was impressive at the back and seems to have formed a good partnership with new-signing Rory McArdle.

He discussed that, the character of his teammates and the upcoming home fixture against Portsmouth in an interview with iFollow Iron.

ON HIS PARTNERSHIP WITH RORY McARDLE…
MW: It’s become natural very quickly. He has slotted into the team and it helped that he came in so early during pre-season. The squad gelled a lot during that time and so being here helped him.

ON THE TEAM’S START TO THE SEASON…
MW: We’re keeping a few clean sheets and that’s down to the whole team, not just the defenders. We’re all working really hard and the clean sheets that come with that are always good for picking up points.

ON THE CHARACTER SHOWED BY THE TEAM TO SEE OUT RESULTS…
MW: You’re going to come under pressure during the season, whether that’s needing to hang onto a 1-0 win like at the weekend - where they were throwing everything at us - or bouncing back from going a goal down. However, it’s important that we stay strong throughout the full 90 minutes.

ON BOUNCING BACK FROM THE BLACKBURN DEFEAT…
MW: I think it was important that we bounced back. It was a disappointing result against Blackburn. I thought we had played quite well and didn’t deserve the defeat. Therefore, it was important that we responded with a 1-0 win.

ON THE DERBY AT DONCASTER…
MW: It was brilliant to see how many turned up. There were just under 2,000 there, and they certainly made an impact. They cheered us on and it was brilliant for them to see us win away from home.

ON HELPING THE NEW PLAYERS TO SETTLE IN…
MW: As a footballer you’re used to a lot of players coming through the door. I think that all of our players are good characters and want to work hard to do well. Therefore, I haven’t had to do much. Thanks to the types of people that the players are, they have been easy to get on with and work with.

ON JORDAN CLARKE’S RETURN…
MW: He was brilliant. Fair play to Levi (Sutton) who came in and did really well. He’s been making some good competition for Jordan (Clarke) and it’s like that throughout the team. There is good competition in all areas and I think that it can only be good for the squad.

ON LEE NOVAK’S FIRST GOAL…
MW: I imagine that’s massive for him. It’s probably the same as with any other striker. That first goal gives them the confidence to hopefully follow it up with some more goals.

ON PORTSMOUTH…
MW: They will be full of confidence having been promoted last season and they’re doing well. They have a good team and have had some great results. Therefore, it will be a tough game. There are a lot of big teams in this league and so you can’t look at it as if one game is going to be harder than the other just because of the club’s history. We just have to be ready for the team that they put out and do as best as we can.
