The 24-year-old brilliantly placed a 20-yard effort home following a forward pass from Rory McArdle, an interception by Paddy Madden and an assist from Josh Morris.

It was the first goal to be netted in the entire EFL following the commencement of the new season.

His effort will go up against Oxford United' Gino van Kessel, who netted at home to Portsmouth and Sean Longstaff who netted against Doncaster Rovers for Blackpool.

Here's what the judges had to say about the efforts:

Conor Townsend – SCUNTHORPE UNITED v AFC Wimbledon – 5th August

Just six minutes into the new season, Townsend joined the attack, created space by dragging the ball backwards and clipped a perfectly flighted shot into the far corner.

Gino van Kessel – OXFORD UNITED v Portsmouth – 12th August

It was the dazzling speed of mind and foot which made van Kessel’s debut goal special. He nipped outside one defender then inside another before sweeping home.

Sean Longstaff – Doncaster Rovers v BLACKPOOL – 19th August

Moments after seeing his side go behind, Longstaff had no other idea in his head than to unleash a piledriver from 30 yards which flew unerringly high into the net.

The winners of the Sky Bet EFL Goals of the Month are chosen by a fan poll on skysports.com.

The shortlist for the poll is decided by a judging panel following suggestions from supporters via Twitter.

The judging panel comprises Sky Sports’ EFL expert Don Goodman; Sky Bet Sponsorship Manager David Tweed and EFL Senior Media Manager Rob Meaden.
