Captain Rory McArdle is hoping United can use their 2-1 win over Peterborough as a platform to progress this season.
A late penalty strike from Josh Morris won the game after Simon Church, who joined the day before, had been fouled to earn the spot-kick, and McArdle also recognised the quality the new signing brought to the side.
After the final whistle, he spoke to iFollow Iron about the victory and using it as a confidence boost, as well as offering his thoughts on new striker Church.
ON THE 2-1 WIN…
RM: It was disappointing to initially go 1-0 down, but I thought the performance level was good and we were creating chances. We knew that if we could get one it would give us some momentum and get the fans behind us to go and get the second - fortunately that’s what happened to us. I think the first half was pretty even. They had a couple of half-chances, but in the second half we came out the traps and started really well. Their goal came against the run of play, but that happens sometimes. It shows great character from us to not let it affect us. We had that little bit of quality again in the box to get the goals.

ON USING THIS WIN TO PUSH ON…
RM: If we end up in this scenario again, we’ve got that experience to fall back on. Equally, we’ve got to try and start games as we did in the second half as well. Even after they scored, we raised our game a little bit. We can’t wait for something to happen for us to react to it and give ourselves a massive mountain to climb. If we start games as we did in the second half, it will give us that opportunity for us to go ahead in a game.
ON BEATING PETERBOROUGH…
RM: They had been on a good run and have scored a lot of goals this year. We knew it was going to be a tough game, but equally we knew if we got our game plan right we could exploit the vulnerabilities we thought they had and go and score goals. We were able to do that today.
ON NEW SIGNING SIMON CHURCH…
RM: You have to look at his career, the clubs he’s played for and the international experience he’s got and that little bit of nous he possesses because that has helped win us the game. For him to gamble like he did won us the penalty. He nearly scored with his first touch as well and he has had another where he had got half a yard. Hopefully he can hit the ground running and I think he has settled in quickly. It’s all about him getting his sharpness and getting his fitness under his belt. Hopefully he will continue and chip in with some goals.
