The 25-year-old, who was rested for the game against Grimsby Town in the Checkatrade Trophy during midweek, also believes getting three points against a side like the Latics will give United the best chance of being in a good position towards the end of the season.

He spoke to iFollow Iron ahead of the Sky Bet League One clash.

ON THE GRIMSBY GAME…
JC: It was a bit touch and go in the first-half, but in the second-half we came out a lot stronger and performed the way we should do. We definitely deserved the win in the end. The cup games are just as important as the league games. It’s a confidence boost, it’s a chance to perform each time, so coming off the back of the Shrewsbury performance we needed to improve and I feel as though we did that night. We just need to continue that onto the league game now.

ON BEING RESTED DURING THE WEEK…
JC: I’m feeling okay. I could be better, I could be worse. I’ve just got to make sure I’m ready for Saturday.

"As long as we can perform at home against these type of sides, and take points from them, it puts us in a good position come towards the end of the season."

ON WANTING TO BEAT WIGAN…
JC: It will be good to beat them or anyone in and around the top, who are expected to do well. It will be a good confidence boost for the players, a good confidence boost for the fans and we’ve got to go out there and try to do that. As long as we can perform at home against these type of sides, and take points from them, it puts us in a good position come towards the end of the season.

ON WIGAN ATHLETIC…
JC: I haven’t been assessing any squads this season, I’ve just been looking at results and seen who has been doing well. We’ve been focussing on trying to get our game plan right for each particular opponent.

ON THE COMPETITION WITHIN THE SQUAD…
JC: I like it. It’s what you need in a team to be a competitive side in the league. It’s definitely good for the team as a whole.
