The Iron were victorious over local rivals Grimsby Town yesterday, which saw them qualify for the next round of the Checkatrade Trophy. United won 2-1 thanks to a brace from Tom Hopper.
The Group H game saw Graham Alexander make seven changes, one of which saw Cameron Burgess make his third start of the season.
The 21-year-old partnered with Murray Wallace, and discussed his performance, the Iron’s qualification in the group stage and his targets for the season in an interview with iFollow Iron.
ON THE RESULT…
CB: I think that we grew into the game, which is encouraging to see and the overall result was positive so I’m happy.
ON THE TIME OF THE FIRST GOAL…
CB: It puts you a little bit more at ease. However, I don’t think we ever thought we weren’t going to score. We always knew that we were going to go and get goals and we showed that.
ON THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE FIRST AND SECOND-HALF PERFORMANCES…
CB: I think that from our point of view we definitely added a bit more tempo and our play was a lot sharper. Also, off the ball we were filling areas so that they couldn’t get out with the ball and we were bringing the game to them a bit more.
ON GETTING HIS THIRD START OF THE SEASON…
CB: Getting game time is all that matters to me and to get it in a competitive game is even better. I’m really happy with that.
ON MAKING A CASE FOR A LEAGUE START…
CB: Everyone is in the same boat. I think that I’m hopefully doing the right things to show that I deserve a chance. However, at the same time, I’m really happy for the lads that are playing right now and playing well at that. It’s a squad game so everyone is really happy that it’s going well for the team.
ON THE IMPORTANCE OF THESE CUP CHANCES…
CB: That’s all that you can do. You could do anything on the training pitch but it’s all about what you do out on the field that matters. Hopefully we made our case on the night.
"It’s a squad game so everyone is really happy that it’s going well for the team."
ON BUILDING A PARTNERSHIP WITH MURRAY WALLACE…
CB: It’s good to play with Muzza or in fact anyone in the squad. It really is a good squad and I’m really happy to play with anyone. It was really nice to get some game time.
ON THE DERBY ATMOSPHERE…
CB: The noise is really important. It was a great effort from the fans, especially on a cold Tuesday night in a cup game. It was a scene that was really encouraging for the boys.
ON THE PREPARATION FOR A DERBY…
CB: I don’t think that preparation changes for the boys. However, at the same time, it can add a little bit more motivation to get the result. That’s what it’s all about and at the end of the day we got the result.
ON HIS CHANCES…
CB: For me personally, I think that I could’ve had a couple. However, it’s something for me to work on and the lads could have possibly have taken a few more chances too. That’s going to happen though in games and the main point is that we are getting chances which is good to see.
ON THE IRON QUALIFYING IN THEIR GROUP…
CB: We have got into the next round which is encouraging. That’s what it is all about as we want to go as far as we can. However, we’ve got another group game to go so we won’t take our foot off the gas and we’ll go again for that one.
