Report: Iron Under-18s 2-0 Notts County Under-18s

11 November 2017

The Iron’s Under-18 side defeated their Notts County counterparts 2-0 on Saturday morning.

Scunthorpe started the game well in the first 15 minutes, dominating and creating opportunities. They scored their first through a well-worked goal and good finish from George Hornshaw from the edge of the box.

After that, United took their foot off the gas and didn’t play as they should have, weren’t as brave to get on the ball as they can be, and the visitors really dominated the game for the next 40-45 minutes.

The Scunthorpe goalkeeper Adam Kelsey and two centre-halves Kane Bartholomew and Sam Lilley were excellent throughout, keeping the Magpies at bay.

The Iron’s second goal came through Louis Collins, who was in the right place at the right time to tap in a rebound.

While good to win, it’s more about performances and development at Under-18 level. The coaching staff said to the group at the end of the game that the team’s standards have been high this season, but certainly, in terms of performance, this one was not where the Under-18 team want to be.

The next game comes at Cambridge United in the FA Youth Cup second round on Tuesday (7pm kick-off).
