Report: Iron 2-0 Charlton Athletic

The central defender was also happy to get six wins on a bounce to continue their fine league form.

After the match, he spoke to iFollow Iron about the 2-0 victory, Morris’ goals and the recent form that has seen United rise to third in the Sky Bet League One table.

ON THE 2-0 VICTORY…
RM: We knew it was going to be a tough game. Charlton are a good team, have got some good players and have had a good start to the season as well. We knew we had to do the right things. We’ve been on a good run, but it counts for nothing if you don’t start games properly and do the things we’ve been doing that have got us on this good run. The quality of the two goals speaks for itself. In the first half, we had a couple of half-chances and they probably dominated the ball in the second half. On the counter, we’ve looked dangerous and bar a couple of shots from the edge of the box, that Matt Gilks dealt with, they didn’t really cut us open too much.

"A few weeks ago, we had a sticky patch, but we got away from that. We are in good form and it shows how quickly it can turn."

Rory McArdle, defender

ON THE IRON’S RECENT FORM…
RM: It’s a massive bonus. We know we have got the quality to compete at this end of the table and we knew it was going to be a tough week. To get six points from this week is a massive achievement. We know that if you can put a good few results together, then you can get quite high up the table. A few weeks ago, we had a sticky patch, but we got away from that. We are in good form and it shows how quickly it can turn.

ON JOSH MORRIS’ WONDER STRIKES…
RM: He has got the quality and you can see that from the goals he has scored this season. It’s not the first time he has whipped it over the wall and it’s gone in. For his second, he cut in and it opened up for him. He has hit it with his right foot, but as long as it goes in the back of net it doesn’t matter. It’s always nice when someone scores a standard of goal as good as what Josh has scored today.

ON THE STRONG DEFENSIVE PERFORMANCES…
RM: We try and keep a clean sheet and go from there. It’s a lot easier to win football matches if we’re keeping them out. It gives the lads up top that bit of confidence that they can go and win us the game. Fair play to them because they have been carving teams open. The amount of chances we have been creating, and the standard of the goals that have been going in, coincides with us keeping clean sheets as well.

ON DONCASTER AWAY IN THE EMIRATES FA CUP...
RM: It’s only down the road and when we were down there early in the season, everyone saw what a good crowd we took. It’s the FA Cup so everyone wants to be in the next round. It’s also a local derby so it ticks all the boxes. We’ll be going there looking to repeat our previous league result from there.
