Alexander relishing a return to Austria

31 May 2017

Iron manager Graham Alexander is relishing a return to Austria for pre-season, as his schedule to prepare the team for 2017-18 begins to take shape.

The tour, which will take place between Saturday, July 15 and Saturday, July 22 is sandwiched between two already-confirmed friendly fixtures away from home.

United have already confirmed away friendly fixtures with York City and Luton Town on July 12th and July 29th respectively.

The Scunthorpe boss gave his thoughts shortly after the trip was confirmed.

ON RETURNING TO AUSTRIA...

GA: It's a fantastic place for us to go and I've always felt it's been a trip of great value when I've been there and come back. It'll be tough for the players, without a shadow of doubt, and they know that. There are a lot of physical and mental tests over the course of the season and I feel it really sets you up for what is to come.

ON THE FACILITIES IN OBERTRAUN...

GA: It's a fantastic venue for work, and that's what I've always found. I've been there as a player, I've been there as a manager and there are no distractions. The environment is purely about team-building, getting the right football training into the players and the fitness work. The whole package is there in Austria because it's built for that.

ON THE BENEFIT OF LAST SEASON'S TRIP...

GA: Last year, we really put the players through it, both physically and mentally, but they certainly came out of that week stronger. We'll be looking to do something similar, along with playing a couple of games while we are over there.

ON THE SCHEDULE...

GA: It'll be tough. We know we have to produce our best when we are physically tired and mentally tired and that can really test the players and staff. It's a really intense week and the evidence has been there in the past.
