WE NEED TO SHOW WHAT WE'RE ABOUT NOW

3 March 2017

United captain Stephen Dawson retains belief in himself and in his squad that the current run of form will be turned around.

“We spoke about it after the game and got into what we’re doing wrong, as a group of players,” Dawson told The Iron PlayerHD after the 2-1 midweek home loss against AFC Wimbledon.

“The last couple of weeks haven’t been good enough. I’d like to think the fans see us as an honest bunch of lads, but it’s just not clicking at the minute.

“We’re trying. It’s not a case of we’re not running, or trying our hardest – it’s just things aren’t falling for us.

“Maybe sometimes you want it too much - to entertain, to be the best team out there. We need to get back to the basics and put it right on Saturday.”

The captain was keen to stress that it does not matter who they face in the final 12 games, the standard must match that of the early stages of the season.

“Every single one of the 12 games left, it doesn’t matter who we’re playing, we need to show what we are about now,” he said.

“As a group we have to start doing it again. It’s not about tactics, it’s not about wanting it as much. It’s about getting back to the basics and getting confidence back into the group.

“I feel as a group we have the players in there to change this, and we believe in ourselves that we can change it.”

The Irishman stressed the importance of the Iron faithful remaining fully fledged to his side.

“The last couple of weeks haven’t been good enough, but our loyal fans will come back and support us, because that’s what they do,” he said.

“Tonight wasn’t good enough, and they’ve every right to be upset, but hopefully come Saturday we can put it right for them.”

The Iron still sit second in the League One table, and things remain in their hands. Third-placed Fleetwood visit on Saturday.

“We are still second, but for us we have 12 cup finals now, and we have to go out and win as many as we can,” he said.

“Let’s take it a game at a time, and hopefully we can get back to the winning ways. I believe as the captain, if we get that first win we will get rid of the nervousness around the players.”
