BIG MATCH PREVIEW: IRON v FLEETWOOD TOWN

4 March 2017

Second takes on third in Sky Bet League One this Saturday, as the Iron welcome Fleetwood Town to Glanford Park.

Graham Alexander and his side will be striving for a return to winning ways, after frustration last time out against AFC Wimbledon.

They’ll be backed by a bumper home crowd also, with at least an extra 1,000 supporters expected as part of Grassroots Football Day.

Alexander says he has a near full-strength squad to choose from, with Sam Mantom (groin) the only anticipated absentee.

Mantom hasn’t featured since last weekend’s draw with Bristol Rovers, and Alexander revealed the midfielder will definitely miss out against the Cod Army.

Second-half strikes from Tom Hopper and Kevin van Veen saw United come from behind to draw 2-2 with Saturday’s opponents at Highbury back in August.

Eggert Jonsson opened the scoring eight minutes prior to the interval - heading home at the far post to give Uwe Rosler’s men the lead.

That lead was doubled soon after the break, with David Ball finishing from 25 yards out to cap a fine solo effort.

However, the Iron halved the deficit just past the hour mark, as Hopper bundled the ball into the net from close range, following Jordan Clarke’s initial attempt.

Van Veen then brought the two teams level, and in spectacular style. When the Dutchman took possession of the ball just in from the left flank, there looked to be little danger, but he soon changed that, as he stupendously curled past a helpless Chris Neal.

With 12 strikes to his name this season, the previously mentioned Ball is Fleetwood’s top marksman so far in the current campaign.

That finish against Alexander’s side was one of the dozen the former Peterborough man has notched in the league throughout 2016-17.
