Fresh from becoming the Iron’s first new summer recruit, Cameron Burgess stated he can’t wait to get in the building and begin his Scunthorpe United career.
The central defender penned a three-year deal, completing a move from Fulham for an undisclosed fee, ending his six year association with the club.
We caught up with the 21-year-old shortly after signing on the dotted line.
ON SIGNING FOR THE CLUB…
CB: I’m absolutely delighted. I’m just glad to get it sorted and I’m raring to go for the season already. The main goal for the season is promotion. That’s my main reason for signing for the club and I’m excited to get started and hopefully achieve that next season.
ON HIS LEAGUE ONE EXPERIENCES LAST SEASON…
CB: I got plenty of experience last season against different teams and different players and hopefully that experience will stand me in good stead playing for Scunthorpe next season. At Oldham we had one of the best defensive records in the league and that’s something we pride ourselves on as defenders.
ON THE DECISION TO LEAVE FULHAM AFTER SIX YEARS…
CB: It’s the right time for me to do that and I’ve been presented with a very good opportunity to sign for Scunthorpe. That’s based on me playing against the club last season and it feels like the right time for me to move on and this was a big opportunity.
ON HIS INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE…
CB: It’s helped me a lot and it’s good to be involved with these teams. They play football differently and have different footballing styles, so it’s certainly helped me a lot. It’s been a good experience for me too, being able to play against different teams and it’s something I enjoy doing.
ON THE THREE-YEAR DEAL AND FUTURE PROSPECTS…
CB: The new stadium is another very attractive thing about the club. Also, if promotion is achieved, it’s a great level to be playing at and that’s where myself and the team want to be. You can see that the team is coming on leaps and bounds every season and when I spoke to the manager we spoke about how the side has improved every season. Hopefully, with natural progression, that continues and will result in promotion to the Championship.
ON HIS NEW TEAMMATES…
CB: I don’t know anyone at the club currently, other than playing against them a couple of times last season. From playing against them and the way they go about their business, they all seem like really good lads and I can’t wait to get started. Pre-season is a lot of hard work, but I want to get my foot in the door, meet the lads and the pre-season tour to Austria will help with that.
ON HIS AIMS FOR THE SEASON…
CB: I have two main goals coming to the club. One is to play games and with that my second goal is to hopefully help the team achieve promotion. If I can achieve both of those goals, I’ll be absolutely delighted.
