Alexander: "It's always good and exciting to see the lads again"

28 June 2017

Iron manager Graham Alexander is happy with how the first two days of pre-season have gone and is looking forward to the coming days as preparations for the new campaign get into full swing.

The United boss welcomed back his squad for pre-season testing on Tuesday before their first full session as a group on Wednesday. With that now out of the way, it will be full steam ahead with their first friendly fixture against North Ferriby United a little over a week away.

Alexander took time to give an update following the players returning to the club, speaking to iFollow Iron.

ON THE RETURN TO TRAINING...

GA: It's been really good. It's always good and exciting to see the lads again and get them in the building, see their condition and reacquaint ourselves with each other. It's been really positive. Tuesday was a different day because the players were in at different times because of the testing. On Wednesday, we had them all in as a group and it was good to see them all back out there.

We're straight into the swing of things and they've worked extremely hard so far. The majority of the lads have come back in good shape. We just need to increase the work load each day.

ON THE NEW PLAYERS SETTLING IN...

GA: Looking out there on the pitch, there didn't seem to be any first day nerves from any of them. They were interacting with the squad and I've always found that when we've introduced new players into the group. We do have a good group of players.

ON THE GOODE, HOPPER AND WILLIAMS' RECOVERIES...

GA: Luke Williams has been more of a slow burner over the summer, so he's not quite ready to join in with us yet. He's still with the physios doing his rehab, but hopefully he won't be too long.

Tom Hopper is doing really well - flying - and Charlie has had a couple of frustrating days where his injury isn't quite one hundred per cent yet, but he's still done everything we've asked him to do. They both worked extremely hard today and it's good to see them back out there.

ON POTENTIAL FURTHER ADDITIONS...

GA: We're hoping to bring another one or two players into the squad. The earlier we can bring them in the better, now that we are in full time training. There is a time issue and we will be patient to get the right players in. Hopefully that will be sooner rather than later.
