Freddie Ladapo’s second-half finish for Shrewsbury meant the Iron fell to a first home league defeat at Glanford Park in over a year.
United manager Graham Alexander made four changes to the side that suffered a 3-1 defeat to Southend United the previous Saturday for the League One encounter.David Mirfin made his return to the starting line-up, whilst Levi Sutton, Kevin van Veen and Tom Hopper also came into the side. Charlie Goode, Scott Wiseman, Craig Davies and Ivan Toney all moved to the bench – but there was a spot on there too for Paddy Madden, who also returned following injury.
The first major opportunity of the game fell to the Iron after five minutes, and it was the familiar format of a Josh Morris whipped free kick. Despite a melee in the Shrews defence, no player in claret and blue could tap home.
The game became a midfield slog up until the 30-minute mark, when a neat touch from van Veen gave him the space to let rip, but his low effort went harmlessly wide.
In all fairness, the away side had settled into the game very well, and looked dangerous going forward in the first 30 minutes.
Joe Riley let rip from 25-yards-out not long after the van Veen effort, but Daniels watched it go wide.
The remainder of the half fizzled out without so much as a chance, as both sides struggled to create any real chances.
Neither manager made any changes at the break, as the Iron looked to get a foothold in the game early on - without challenging Leutwiler in the Shrews net, however.
United created their next opportunity after 65 minutes following good work from Madden. The Irishman laid it into the path of Holmes, who then set up Dawson for the shot, but the deflection took the sting off it and Leutwiler held at the second attempt.
The visitors took the lead after 69 minutes following superb work down the left wing, before Tyler Roberts laid it back for Ladapo to guide the ball home.
Junior Brown almost doubled the away side's lead on 77 minutes, but his dash into the box and low effort went harmlessly wide.
Morris hit a beauty from 25-yards out eight minutes before the end, but his effort went just over, and wide.
Leutwiler was the hero for the Shrews, as he somehow clawed out Davies’ header after Toffolo crossed.
A minute or so later Madden was played through, but the sub could only find the side netting.
Five minutes of additional time were added on, but United couldn’t find that all important opening, and the game finished 1-0 to the visitors.
