Report: Iron 1-1 AFC Wimbledon

5 August 2017

Townsend opened the scoring at Glanford Park for United just six minutes into the new campaign with a well-struck shot into the top right-hand corner.

Speaking to iFollow Iron after the game, Townsend said he was disappointed not to win the game and Scunthorpe need to use the midweek cup clash versus Notts County to iron out mistakes from Saturday.

CT: We always knew it was going to be a tough game. The first match of the season you never know what to expect. I think we’ve got to be disappointed not to win it, especially after going 1-0 up and the way we played in the first-half. We just stepped off the gas in the second-half and let them back into the game, but in the end a draw is probably a fair result.

"Hopefully we can chip in with a few goals and assists this year and help the team going forward."

CT: I think it’s good, it allows me and Jordan (Clarke) to get forward a lot more and have a bit more freedom. That can bring the best out of the both of us, we’re both attack-minded and Jordan got in some great positions as well. Hopefully we can chip in with a few goals and assists this year and help the team going forward.

CT: It is always tough the first couple of games, you never know where you are at until you actually play. It was a warm day on Saturday and we worked really hard, and physically the next couple of games you pick up back from where you left from at the end of the last season.

CT: It’s a cup game, so we’ll be using it to try and improve on Saturday’s match and if we can iron a few things out that we’re not happy with and build on it from Saturday then that’s what we are looking to do.
