Report: Iron 3-3 Notts County (6-5 pens)

8 August 2017

The Iron were tied at 3-3 after extra time and won the game 6-5 on penalties thanks to six confident strikes and a Matt Gilks save in sudden death.

The Irishman grabbed himself two goals and netted his penalty in the shoot-out to help United into the next round of the Carabao Cup and now feels even more confident going into the season.

The striker is only one goal away from entering the top 10 all-time goal scorers for the club and told iFollow Iron how much that would mean to him.

GETTING OFF THE MARK…

PM: It’s always good to get early goals as it fills you with confidence. The main thing though is that we got through to the next round.

ON NOTTS COUNTY…

PM: Notts County are a good side. They’re a professional team so you can never underestimate them. We knew it was going to be a tough game and we may have made it into hard work but Notts County are a good side and they proved that.

ON THE PLAYING CONDITIONS…

PM: It’s wasn’t good. You have the extra weight of the wet t-shirt on you for 120 minutes as well. It’s really tough but we dug in and the boys showed good heart to finish the job off. I’m a fit lad and I’ve had a full pre-season so I feel fine and I’ve just added on another 120 minutes of practice.

Our job was to stay in the cup and get to the next round. We have done that against a tough team.

ON A POTENTIAL CUP RUN…

PM: Every player would like a nice cup run. Bradford showed that a lower league team could go all the way to the final. It’s going to be hard to replicate that but today has given us a confidence boost and we will see who we get in the next round. We’ll take anyone who comes out of the hat.

ON BEING ONE GOAL AWAY FROM THE IRON'S ALL-TIME TOP TEN…

PM: I’ll just have to keep working hard and hopefully those couple of goals will come that see me into the top ten. We’ll take each goal as it comes. To be in the top ten all time goal scorers of a big club like Scunthorpe is something to tell the grandkids about. It would mean a lot to me. I’ve always had confidence in myself to score goals. I would love to keep getting more.
