The winger, who was delighted to get off the mark for 2017-18, cut in on his left foot in the 83rd minute to send a stunning shot from outside of the box into the bottom corner.

He gave his reaction to the goal and the team’s win in an interview with iFollow Iron.

ON HIS GOAL…
JM: It was a nice one for myself and good to get off the mark for the season, but more importantly it’s the first three points and first clean sheet of the season. As long as the team wins, I’m not bothered whether I’m scoring or not - I’ve always said that. I just work hard and always have done, and if the goals are coming then it’s great.

ON THE FIRST LEAGUE WIN OF THE SEASON…
JM: We’ve maybe been unlucky in the first two games, we’ve had good periods in them, but I think we were back to our best on Saturday in the second-half and we deserved the three points.

ON THE FIRST CLEAN SHEET…
JM: It’s massive, they win you a lot of games. Matt Gilks has pulled some great saves off and I think all the back four were amazing. It’s a squad game and everyone’s got to be together on the pitch. It was nice to get the clean sheet and more importantly the win.

ON BUILDING AS SQUAD…
JM: It’s good to get up and running and we’re obviously still unbeaten as well, which is a big thing. We will just carry on and go onto Tuesday night, and go from there.

ON THE MIDDLESBROUGH CARABAO CUP GAME…
JM: They were a Premier League team last year and they’ve just been relegated, so they’ve got some great players. You always want to test yourselves against the best, and that’ll be no different for the other lads. It will be a great occasion for us and hopefully we can give ourselves a great go. It was a good win here against Notts County and it sets us up a nice tie at Middlesbrough. It will be a great game and one we’re looking forward to.
