Report: Iron 3-1 Sunderland Under-21s

29 August 2017

The centre-back played his first ninety minutes of the season and wants to try and break into the team, but knows it will be difficult because of his side’s good start in the league.

He spoke to iFollow Iron following Tuesday night’s win and looks ahead to the Bury game at the weekend.

ON THE 3-1 WIN…

CG: I think it went okay. We scored three nice goals and were disappointed not to get a clean sheet, but it was a good test for a lot of us that haven’t had that recently. It’s good for me personally to get my first 90 minutes in about six months. They played football differently to a few teams in League One. They like to keep the ball and play out from the back, so it was something different and a good test.

ON HIS PERFORMANCE…

CG: I feel I did okay, I could definitely be better. Like I always say I will never come off and say I was perfect, but it my first 90 in a long time so I’m looking forward to cracking on and getting back to full fitness now.

ON TRYING TO BREAK INTO THE TEAM…

CG: I’ve just got to continue. When the team are picking up good results like at the weekend (against Plymouth), it’s hard as a defender. I’m a team player, I’ll wait and be patient and fight for my chance. I will keep plugging away and try to force my way into the team.

ON THE BURY GAME ON SATURDAY…

CG: We always look for three points in every game. Bury haven’t started great, but they are a good side and it will be a tough place to go. We saw that last year. A clean sheet is always the aim, especially as a defender. You always want to keep the goals out and keep a clean sheet. I think if we do that we will win a lot of games.
