Report: Iron 1-1 AFC Wimbledon

5 August 2017

Scunthorpe drew 1-1 in their first league game of the season at Glanford Park, with Conor Townsend giving them the lead early on.

Jimmy Abdou equalised midway through the second-half to level the scores though, and both sides had to make do with a point.

Alexander provided his reaction to iFollow Iron after the game.

ON THE MATCH…
GA: We have to be content with a point over the 90 minutes. I don’t think we were good enough over the whole game to take three. In the first-half, we were good and deserved the lead we got with a fantastic goal. We needed to take one of the other opportunities we created but in the second half we lost our mentality on the front foot, and let Wimbledon gain momentum. We were disappointed with the goal. It was a cheap goal and it was the second ball, though the lad finished it well to be fair. We didn’t play well enough in the second half to not concede and I thought a draw was a fair result.

ON NEAL BISHOP LIMPING OFF…
GA: We’ll see how he is. You know what Bish is like, he wants to play on, but he said at half-time he was struggling and he wanted to give it a go. You could see he was struggling on his first run (in the second half) though and we had to make the change. It was disappointing because he was doing really well in the first half up to that point. I don’t think we competed as well as we could do in the second half. We have to get better at that, get out of pre-season mode and remember what League One is about. We’re talking about a lot of players who had fantastic seasons and did their jobs (last year) so maybe today is a reminder of what it’s about and where we have to improve.

ON MATT GILKS’ LATE SAVE…
GA: The one down to his right was fantastic – his agility to get down and the strength in his arms to get it away to safety was superb. I don’t think he had any chance with the goal because he was unsighted so that was a disappointment.

ASSESSING OVERALL…
GA: We’re disappointed we’ve let a one-goal lead slip and have drawn the game, but it’s a point and there will be a lot of games this season where we’re challenged, as I said in my programme notes, and it’s where you are after 46 games. We have to be content with it but we know where we need to improve. We’ve never tried to convince ourselves any differently. Whatever would have happened today there would be points to improve on.
