Report: Rochdale 1-1 Iron

12 August 2017

United came from behind to draw 1-1 thanks to an equaliser from substitute Duane Holmes, and there was plenty to be encouraged by for the Scunthorpe boss.

He gave his reaction to iFollow Iron after the game.

ON THE GAME OVERALL…
GA: It’s a good point away from home and we deserved at least that, without a shadow of a doubt. We were looking to improve and get three points if we could but we knew this was a tough place to come to. It was their first home game of the season, a good crowd and we knew they’d come at us. I just felt we waited until we conceded before we really put the foot to the floor - that’s the only thing. I felt we were a little bit hesitant in our actions and not at full throttle until we conceded. We made a couple of changes and that gave us an impetus - not just the two players who came on but also in the other players’ minds in that we had ‘nothing to lose now, let’s go for it’. We’re hungry, greedy and want more points but I’m delighted with the players’ response to going a goal down away from home against a very good team. To be fair, I was delighted after Tuesday’s exertions, following 120 minutes on the pitch, to really dominate the game in the last 25 minutes or so. It shows the boys are fit, mentally strong and want to win games.

ON DUANE HOLMES’ IMPACT AS A SUBSTITUTE…
GA: He was disappointed he wasn’t in the starting line-up, which I can understand after his performance when he came on the other night. I want people knocking on my door by training well and playing well when they get the chance. Duane has certainly done that in the last couple of games. Duane is putting pressure on me to pick him, and pressure on the players in front of him to perform. I said to him yesterday there’s no doubt he’d come on and make an impact. I felt Tom Hopper did too, to be fair to him, he put himself about and helped us stay in their half.

ON JORDAN CLARKE MISSING OUT…
GA: Jordan has a little thigh strain at the moment, and he got that on Tuesday. We didn’t know it was a strain at the time but he was holding it and then over the next couple of days we discovered that was the problem. He wasn’t fit enough for the game, and Levi Sutton got his opportunity. He did really well. It’s not a massive strain that will rule him out for ages. We’ll see how he progresses day-by-day.

ON THE PERFORMANCE…
GA: I’m content that there are signs of improvement. I’ve experimented with the line-up and this is now the start of how we want to go on, and really settle the players down and work from this point now. I’m delighted with the response of the players to come here against a very good team like Rochdale following Tuesday’s exertions. It shows we have really good conscientious players who want to win games and I know we can improve from now. I’m delighted with the players so far and we want to improve each week.
