United produced a five-star performance against Darlington at in the first game of the 1957-58 campaign to be played at the Old Show Ground.

Three goals in the space of four minutes ultimately won the tie for the Iron before the side added two further goals in the second half to compound their opposition to an emphatic defeat. Victory for the Iron also took the side to ten league goals for the campaign in just three matches, conceding just two.

Jack Marriot got a brace to take his tally for the season up to three, while Ronnie Waldock backed up his treble five days earlier with another two strikes. Rod Fletcher also got his second of the campaign.
