WELL PREPARED AHEAD OF SHREWS CLASH

16 September 2016

Heading into this weekend’s clash with Shrewsbury Town, Iron defender David Mirfin says the whole squad is looking prepared as ever.

It’s the start of a busy week for United, with the rearranged home encounter against Charlton Athletic to follow on Tuesday, but Mirfin believes it’s important not to look too far ahead.

Speaking to The Iron PlayerHD, Mirfin said: “Training has been really good, the lads are looking really sharp.

“We had a bit of a harder day on Tuesday where we were working on a lot of stuff, and Thursday's obviously about getting that sharpness, with Friday being about preparing for the game on Saturday.

“With the games we’ve got coming up, it’s all about getting ready for those set of games, but taking each one as it comes.”

A solid defensive display was the bedrock for the 4-0 victory over Southend United last Saturday, and the 31-year-old is expecting things to continue to improve going forward.

“The more we’re going on, we’re looking better and better as a collective,” he explained.

“There were four different scorers against Southend. We’ve got a few lads at the top of the scoring charts, and it is a team game going forward, which is the same at the back.

“I think a lot of the credit might go to the back five, but as a team we’re now working on both sides, and I think we’ve all got to take the plaudits for that.”

Mirfin explained too that the competition for places which currently exists within the squad can only be a good thing.

Which is none more so evident he says than with Charlie Goode, who Mirfin states has really staked a claim with some of his recent performances.

“That was always a big thing going into the season that we knew we’d be able to continue that partnership (with Murray Wallace),” he stated.

“There’s also Charlie (Goode) though who, when he’s played this season, has done brilliantly, and in training he’s sharp and he’s pushing us every day.

“I think that’s the biggest thing we’ve got. Knowing we’ve got someone there who’s ready to take our place, we know we’ve got to play as well as we can each game.”
