GREAT TO SEE SUCH ENTHUSIASM

9 September 2016

Iron boss Graham Alexander has revealed his players are itching to get back into action, when they take on Southend United at Glanford Park this Saturday.

While saying the short break afforded to the squad recently was a blessing, Alexander stated every member of the team has shown a hunger in the lead-up to the match, leaving him with some tough selection issues ahead of the clash with the Shrimpers.

Alexander told The Iron PlayerHD: “It’s one of those where you have your little breather, everyone comes back refreshed and then you can’t wait for the next game.

“Looking at the players train this week, that’s been the case. They’re desperate to get out there on Saturday, and perform in front of the supporters.

“I love to see a genuine enthusiasm to go out and train, and an enthusiasm to be part of a team and to go out there and play football. It’s been very upbeat training this week, and we need to take that into the game on Saturday.”

Giving his assessment of Phil Brown’s side, the Scunthorpe manager doesn’t see much point in reading too much into their start to the new season.

“I’ve only looked at what they do technically, tactically, and what they’re going to bring here on Saturday,” he said.

“I haven’t looked too much into their results - home and away, and this that and the other. I’ve just looked at what they do well, and what potential weaknesses we can exploit.

“They have very good individuals within that group, and they have a physicality about themselves. We have to concentrate on what we can do, and how we can nullify their threats."

Alexander also touched on the three deadline day additions in Richie Smallwood, Harry Toffolo and Jonathon Margetts, saying they’ve come into the squad and got down to business right from the get go.

"They've integrated into the group really well,” he added.

“We’re just integrating them into the way we want to do things, and into the playing style we expect as a team, as well as getting them integrated with the other players.

“All three of them when we speak to them, are all good lads, and they’re all motivated to do well and win games.”
