BIG MATCH PREVIEW: SHREWSBURY v IRON

16 September 2016

Second-placed United head to Greenhous Meadow this Saturday, looking to maintain their strong early season form, against Shrewsbury Town.

The Iron go into the match in a buoyant mood, after putting four past Southend United without reply last weekend at Glanford Park.

Micky Mellon’s Shrews currently sit 18th in the League One table, after picking up six points so far.

Manager Graham Alexander says Jamie Ness and Luke Williams are getting closer to making a return after being involved in first team training.

Elsewhere he says the squad is in good health, giving him a plenty of selection dilemmas ahead of the clash with the Shrews.

There was late drama the last time the two sides met, as Scunthorpe were denied all three points with virtually the last kick of the game, with Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro’s stoppage time strike earning the hosts a share of the spoils in a 2-2 draw.

It had been Salop who’d got their noses ahead in the opening period, and they went in at the break 1-0 up thanks to Sully Kaikai’s close range finish.

That would be how it stayed until the 69th minute, when Kyle Wootton levelled things up for the visitors. It was soon followed up by Paddy Madden, who rounded the ‘keeper on 78 minutes to complete a swift turnaround.

Frustration beckoned however, with Akpa Akpro scoring late on, to send United home with just one point instead of three.

After joining the Shrews in the summer, Louis Dodds has already made an impression at Greenhous Meadow.

Dodds left Port Vale to link up with Mellon, a club he’d spent eight successful years previously - scoring over 50 times in just under 300 league outings.
