Iron centre back David Mirfin isn’t expecting anything but a difficult test, when he and his teammates take on Oldham Athletic on Tuesday night.United go into the game with the Latics sitting four points clear at the top of the League One table, a factor which he believes is sure to result in the home side raising their game.
Speaking to The Iron PlayerHD, Mirfin said: “I think it’s going to be a really tough game.
“The teams in the bottom four are sometimes the most dangerous, they’re wanting to get out of that position, and I think even more so when they’re playing a team high up in the league and at the top. They’ll look at it as a game which could spark their season.
“Teams do show you a bit more respect sometimes with where you are, but it’s up to us to come to those hurdles and get over them.”
Saturday’s victory over MK Dons was a big one in Mirfin’s eyes, and one which he feels could prove pivotal as the season goes on.
He says the manner of the win was the most pleasing aspect, against a side he expects to be up there challenging at the tail end of the campaign.
“If we’re to be successful this season, I think it’ll definitely be a game that we’ll look back at and say it was an important three points,” he stated.
“Come the end of the season, I’ll be very surprised if they’re not in the top six. They’ve got a lot of attacking players who are threats going forward, so there are a lot of positives we can take going forward.”
Giving his thoughts on the season as a whole, the defender couldn’t hide his elation, but at the same time was quick to point out that there’s a long way to go yet.
“We are delighted where we are. We don’t want to think we’ve done the hard work, I think the hard work is only just beginning now,” he insisted.
“It’s up to us as a group, the management and the staff to make sure we keep on our toes and keep the good run going.”
