HOPEFULLY DONE ENOUGH TO KEEP THE SHIRT

28 October 2016

Midfielder Duane Holmes feels last weekend’s win over Chesterfield will give the squad confidence heading into Saturday’s home fixture with Swindon Town.

Holmes was instrumental as United cruised to a 3-0 win at the Proact Stadium, and the American says he’ll be hoping to feature from the start once more.

Speaking to The Iron PlayerHD, Holmes said: “I think they’ve had a couple of good results recently, but we always focus on ourselves and we feel if we do as we want to do, we’ll get a victory.

“We’re all pleased that we got back to winning ways and put the Oldham performance behind us. We’re just looking forward to Saturday now.

"The manager pulled me in before the Oldham game and said that he wanted to give me a rest to make sure I was fit for last Saturday.

"I think it helped, I felt fresh on Saturday and hopefully I’ve done enough to keep the shirt.”

Not for the first time this season, the goals were shared against the Spireites - something which Holmes was pleased to see.

“I’m happy (with the assist for Kevin van Veen’s goal), but credit has to go to Kevin, as he still had a lot to do. Someone with his ability does it very easily, and his goal set us firmly on our way.

“There are goals throughout the team and we’ve also got Paddy (Madden), Josh (Morris) is on a great run and, everyone else has been scoring goals, which breeds confidence because we’re not relying on a couple of people to get the goals.”

A front foot start was imperative in the 21-year-old’s eyes and Holmes feels the fact that he and his teammates managed to do so is a real positive to take out of the game.

He said: “Against Oldham I don’t think we began in the manner which we normally start games. However last weekend we did focus on getting a bright start and I feel as though we did that.

“We pinned them back for a good 15 or 20 minutes at the start of the first half and I felt we were unlucky to go in at 0-0. We did manage to get the early goal in the second half, and built from there.”
