FOCUSED ON OURSELVES

7 October 2016

Giving his thoughts ahead of Saturday’s home encounter with Northampton Town, midfielder Duane Holmes insists the squad are fully prepared for the challenge.

The American-born player says he and his teammates will be looking for a fast-paced opening to the match and he believes, if they do so, they have a great chance of a positive result.

Speaking to The Iron PlayerHD, Holmes said: “They’ve had a good start to the season and obviously have continued what they were doing last year.

“It’s about us and we’re focusing on ourselves, so I’m sure we’ll be ready for the test. We focus on ourselves every game and I think, if we’re right, we’ve got a good chance of beating anyone in the division.

“We want to start well and we want to keep our home record as strong as we can. Like I’ve said though, we just need to focus on us and if we do that I think we’ll get something from the game.”

United’s unbeaten home league record stretches back to last December and, Holmes want to maintain that for as long as possible.

“It’s obviously important to make Glanford Park a fortress and we’ve been playing really well at home, so hopefully that continues,” he explained.

“I think sides are taking notice of what we’re doing. I think they’ll know we’re a good team with good players and we’re capable of winning games - so I don’t think many clubs will want to come here.”

Reflecting on Tuesday’s Checkatrade Trophy victory over Shrewsbury Town, the attacker says progression was always the aim and, now the squad have got it, they’re pleased.

He also added that the win shows the strength in-depth which currently exists within the squad, with manager Graham Alexander making several alterations going into the game.

“It’s another competition we’re wanting to do well in. We want to win every game and we’re obviously delighted to be through,” he stated.

“We want to keep the momentum going and I thought it was a good performance from the boys. Added to that we got a clean sheet, so we couldn’t have asked for more.

“It’s a very good squad and, I’ve said it many times before, the squad is very good. The lads who came in did a great job.

“I don’t think it matters who plays, we’re all very capable of doing a job and the lads proved that on Tuesday night.”
