WOULD BE GREAT TO GET THE FANS COMING BACK

10 May 2016

Iron shotstopper Luke Daniels was understandably disappointed to see his side miss out on the play-offs by goal difference, but was happy to give the large travelling faithful a show on Sunday.

Tom Hopper gave his side the lead in the first half at Sheffield United after he tucked away a saved Paddy Madden shot.

Then Madden himself got on the scoresheet, as his deflected effort sent George Long the wrong way.

However, Barnsley’s win at Wigan meant the Iron’s season would finish prematurely.

“It’s disappointing that the results haven’t gone our way,” Daniels told The Iron PlayerHD.

“I think after the Bradford game we’d have all taken it coming down to the last game.

“We’re all disappointed, but there are so many positives to be taken out of the second half of the season.”

Sunday’s clean sheet meant that collectively as a team the Iron had kept out their opposition 21 times this season, something Daniels hopes to take forward into the next campaign.

“It’s a great thing to build on. Although at times we’ve not scored as many goals as a team this year, we do have players that can score so it gives us a solid base to build on," he stated.

United and Barnsley both finished on 74 points, but the Tykes’ superior goal difference saw them edge us out. Daniels claims the team won’t get too down about it though, because it was never theirs to lose.

“It’s tough because I think we’d have had a really good chance if we’d have snuck in there, because the teams that go into the play-offs in good form usually do really well," he mentioned.

“We’re not going to get too down about it because it was always Barnsley’s to lose.”

On a final note, Daniels had plenty of praise for the magnificent support the team have had over the last few weeks, and throughout the season.

He hopes the team’s performance levels encourage more to come back next season.

He concluded: “We’ve done well in recent weeks and gave ourselves a really good chance. The fans have been fantastic these last few weeks and they’ve really turned up in their numbers.

“It’d be great if we could get the supporters coming back and make Glanford Park a really tough place to come.”
