Q&A: DAVID MIRFIN

26 May 2016

David Mirfin answered questions sent in by fans for our matchday programme earlier in the season...

1500 Club, via Twitter, asks: Who's the best former Iron player, no longer at the club, who you played with?
DM: "I think it's got to be Gary Hooper. He's by far the best striker I've ever played with. His partnership with Paul Hayes was one of the reasons why we got promoted, and why we stayed up the following season."

Simon Wright, via Twitter, asks: How's the new addition to the family (David’s wife Laura gave birth to second child Adaline Matilda before Christmas)?
DM: "She’s doing really good, though she likes waking up at two o'clock, three o'clock! But she's been brilliant, and her big sister is loving having a little sister. It’s been really nice."

MarkTheDonnyIron, via Twitter, asks: What's your matchday routine?
DM: "I think the older I've got, the less I've had one. If we're at home, it'll be porridge for breakfast, and porridge for pre-match. Basically anything which can give me as much energy as possible. It's pretty mundane and boring, there's nothing out of the ordinary which I do."

ChrisBraithwaite, via Instagram, asks: Have you played in a different position to centre-back when you were younger?
DM: "I started as a central midfielder, then went up front. At Huddersfield, if there was me and Andy Booth on the bench, and Peter Jackson at the time wanted to bring a striker on, Boothy would say put Mirf on up top ahead of me."

JoshBraithwaite, via Instagram, asks: Who's the best player you've played with?
DM:
"There was Danny Schofield at Huddersfield, who was probably the best with his feet. He was unbelievable, and I was surprised he never played at a higher level. Then there are players like Grant McCann, who played at international level."

_jay_clark_2004, via Instagram, asks: Who's the funniest player in the changing room?
DM:
"I'd probably say Charlie (Goode) makes me laugh, but I don't think he means to make me laugh. I think Chris Burton and Joe Sharp, the physios, have got to get a shout. They’re always having everyone

Canadiangal57, via Instagram, asks: What's the worst flight you've ever been on?
DM:
"That was this year, coming back from Dublin on my own flying back to Doncaster. It was a little propeller plane. At Dublin airport there were people screaming, so not the best. I think bigger planes are better to fly in than little ones."

_.fin_, via Instagram, asks: Who's the best striker you've played against?
DM:
"In the youth team I played against Wayne Rooney at Everton, and Dean Ashton when he was at Crewe, and they were unbelievable. Professionally, I'd say Shane Long at Reading was a really tough opponent."

Matthew_p8, via Instagram, asks: What's your proudest moment as an Iron player?
DM:
"Definitely Wembley I think, and probably a close second was the Reading game the season after when we stayed up."
