CHUFFED WITH AWARDS SUCCESS

10 May 2016

Iron defender David Mirfin stated it was "really unexpected" for him to claim seven awards at the end of season awards dinner on Sunday.

The 31-year-old scooped the Ernie Storey Memorial Trophy - the supporter's player of the year - among other awards and gave his reaction to the campaign following 38 appearances in all competitions.

"It was really unexpected," he told The Iron PlayerHD.

"Like I said when I collected one of the awards, for me personally there were two or three players in front of me that deserved it more.

"I'm delighted though and hopefully I can kick on from this going into next season. To be voted player of the season from all the various different groups is great. I'm really chuffed and hopefully it's a good sign for next season."

The defender chipped in with two goals and a number of assists over the course of the season and is already looking to build on his performances going into next season.

"I'm really proud to have been voted (to win the Ernie Storey Memorial Trophy)," he continued.

"I'd like to thank all the fans who voted for me. It started off as a disappointing season for me, but I kicked on and I've never looked back.

"The fans here even more so than elsewhere appreciate it when you work your socks off in every game and that's the minimum I've got to do. There are lads who are technically better than me, but I'll always try my best and I think that's what the fans appreciate."

Speaking about the end to the campaign, which included just two league defeats since the turn of the year and six wins in a row to complete the season, Mirfin said the team can take great confidence going forward.

"We've got a lot of momentum and confidence (going into next season)," he stated.

"Next season if I can get a few more goals to contribute in that respect, it will be even better and certainly towards the end of the season, the lads have started counting towards the goal tally."
