Iron defender Conor Townsend believes Tuesday's 2-0 win over Doncaster Rovers was well deserved, considering the dominance United enjoyed throughout the game.

Townsend felt it was vital his side took the positives from the draw with Gillingham into the clash with Darren Ferguson's side and in doing so they were able to win comfortably in the end.

He told The Iron PlayerHD: "With it being a derby game for the fans it was nice to get the win. I thought we thoroughly deserved the win, because we dominated the game from start to finish.

"I think we carried the performance from Saturday into Tuesday, which we needed to do. We didn't need to dwell on not taking our chances and obviously we did that really well.

"In pretty much all the games which Nick (Daws) has been in charge of, I think the performance levels have been good, apart from maybe the first half against Fleetwood. So if we look after our performance level, then hopefully we can keep picking up points."

United travel to Shrewsbury this Saturday and despite the Shrews' league position, Townsend feels the visitors will be in for a tough test at Greenhous Meadow.

"We know they're playing really well at the minute, but we're playing really well at the moment so hopefully it'll be a good game. It'll be a good test for us and I think if we can keep doing what we have been then it'll be a good game," he said.

"I think with anyone in this league it's evenly matched. We showed in a few games when we went to Millwall and to Coventry and won. I don’t think there are any easy games in this league, so it'll be a tough test for us."

On a personal note, the former Hull City man spoke of his delight that he's continued to keep his place in a defence, which he highlighted is in top form at the moment.

"I'm happy to be playing first and foremost and as a defence we've had six clean sheets in the last nine games. So as a defender that's obviously encouraging," he stated.

"So that's the main aim, and just keep helping the team which will hopefully mean we can get the three points on Saturday."
