DEVELOPMENT SIDE BEATEN AT CHESTERFIELD

8 March 2016

The Iron's development side lost 2-0 away at their Chesterfield counterparts on Tuesday.

The game got off to a frantic start, as the hosts tried to seize the initiative. There was terrific work by Lewis Butroid to clear off the line twice from shots from Jordan Slew and Rai Simons for the hosts.

In the seventh minute, Jack Dyche did well on the left to beat two men before pressuring the follow-up, winning the tackle and forcing the ball back.

Chesterfield took the lead on 13 minutes, as Liam Graham fired into the roof of the net from six yards out after a great run down the left and a low cross into the middle.

Soon after, the Iron looked for a response. Noel Burdett and Levi Sutton get involved to force the ball to Leslie Sackey and Fortunate Sithole. The defence initially dealt with the square ball by Dyche, but the ball fell to Sackey after James Dean-Atkinson's block, with the striker firing wide.

Scunthorpe defended resolutely and also looked to break with pace. Goalkeeper Ben Ledger was called into action on 31 minutes when a low cross into the box found Orrell. He laid back to Slew, but the Iron shotstopper gathered his effort.

Soon after, there was terrific resolute defending from Butroid as he threw himself in front of another two shots from Slew and the trialist.

On 39 minutes, there was a chance for the Iron as Dyche fed through Burdett. His shot looped up, but nicely for home goalkeeper Chapman, who gathered.

Just a minute later, there was another chance for Burdett, but he rolled an effort with his left foot into the arms of Chapman after doing well to get space.

Just after half-time, Simons lashed wide for the hosts from the edge of the area after initial good defending from the Iron.

Then on 47 minutes, Orrell headed wide after a brilliant cross from the left. The striker headed just over the bar from five yards out.

Then Simons got through, Ledger did well to delay the effort, before the striker fired into the side netting.

Chesterfield made it two through Laurence Maguire on 53 minutes. Every hand in the Iron team went up claiming offside as Maguire touched the effort into the net on the line after Slew's shot. It still stood though.

With 61 minutes on the clock, the Spireites almost made it three. Orrell put in from the right, and their trialist headed wide from four yards out.

As the half went on, both sides looked to push forward from midfield. Chesterfield had a penalty shout denied before Simons hits a volley over the stadium after a brilliant ball from the left found him about 15 yards from goal.

In the 85th minute, the Iron's Levi Sutton did well to beat four players en route to the edge of the area before curling an effort over the bar.

The hosts had a final chance in the last minute, as Callum Greaves dragged an effort wide of the mark from the edge of the area after he found space.
