BURDETT HITS BRACE IN U18S WIN

12 March 2016

The Iron's U18 side defeated their Notts County counterparts 2-0 at Appleby-Frodingham on Saturday morning.

United started well and the visitors were indebted to their goalkeeper in the opening five minutes as Noel Burdett, Sonny Shilling and Leslie Sackey all saw their efforts well saved.

However, on 14 minutes United got the breakthrough that their early play deserved. James Dean Atkinson curled in a corner which was half-cleared to Burdett on the edge of the penalty area. Showing excellent technique, Burdett beat two opponents before volleying past the visitors' goalkeeper, much to the delight of his team mates.

County started to get back into the game and the Iron had to defend in numbers to maintain their lead as the teams went in at the interval.

On 47 minutes, Sackey was through but pushed his shot wide of the far post.

The visitors forced a number of corners but United's defence stood firm and dealt with any danger.

Burdett went close on 80 minutes when his effort from distance bounced off the County crossbar as the home team tried to seal the win.

With only two minutes remaining, Burdett notched his second of the game when he glided past his opponents before unleashing a shot from the edge of the box which flew past the visitors' goalkeeper, sealing the win for the Iron's youngsters.
