NICE TO START AT HOME FOR THE FANS

22 June 2016

Iron defender David Mirfin believes Bristol Rovers will provide a stern test when they visit Glanford Park on the opening day of the 2016-17 season.

Mirfin compared the progress of the Pirates to that of Burton Albion, who were United’s opponents when the 2015-16 campaign got underway.

Mirfin told Scunthorpe-United.co.uk: “If you take into account what Burton Albion have done, it’s going to be a tough game. Bristol Rovers have had a double promotion, and when clubs have momentum like that, it’s always going to be a big test.

“I think it’s nice to start at home, for the fans definitely.

"However, as a player, it’s never been an issue for me, whether we start at home or away.

“It’s always good to play your last game of the season at home, and obviously it depends on how good your season has gone, as to how good it can be.”

The centre back also hammered home the importance of getting off to a good start, as he believes it will set United up for a strong campaign.

He explained: “We know a good start is vital, and you only have to look at the teams which got promoted, and they all had relatively good openings to the campaign.

“If you can get that momentum as early as possible, then it stands you in good stead for the rest of the season.”
