UNION UNIS GSCHWANDT MATCH ABANDONED

12 July 2016

There was frustration for United in the first of their two pre-season fixtures in Austria.

A waterlogged pitch led to the abandonment of the Iron’s match with Union Unis Gschwandt just after the half an hour mark, with Scunthorpe leading 1-0.

Kyle Wootton had given Graham Alexander’s side an early lead inside of seven minutes, with a well taken strike from 20 yards out, following a neat pass from Luke Williams.

They looked to be in the mood for more. However, that would be as good as it got for the visitors, as the elements took hold.

United started the game in a positive fashion, as goalscorer Wootton got on the end of a dangerous cross which was gathered by the Gschwandt goalkeeper.

The striker then scored what would turn out to be the only goal of the game, as he combined with Williams before slotting home from distance.

Alexander’s side then went in search of a quick-fire second, and they were unlucky not to get one, with Kevin van Veen, Williams and Hakeeb Adelakun all probing within minutes of Wootton’s goal.

The hosts’ ‘keeper then pulled off a fabulous double save to deny United’s Dutch striker, and then Williams, who went for goal from inside the six yard box.

Shortly after though, the weather brought a swift end to proceedings, forcing Alexander and his players to head back to their training base.

Iron team: Anyon, Laird, King, Mirfin, Williams, Dawson, van Veen, Adelakun, Goode, Wootton, Sutton.
