TEST WAS JUST WHAT WE REQUIRED

15 July 2016

Iron manager Graham Alexander was pleased with the test FC Liefering provided his side at this stage of pre-season.

United played the final game of their pre-season training camp in Austria on Friday night, losing 2-1 and 21 players received a run-out.

Talking about the test the hosts posed, Alexander told The Iron PlayerHD: "It was just what we required from the game.

"They moved the ball really quickly and the pitch was perfect for zipping it about.

"We had to work really hard off the ball, following on from a really tough week for the boys.

"We went into the game fatigued because of all the hard work this week but I thought from the first 10-15 minutes we played like we can do, and did really well after that point.

"It was a great exercise and all of the boys have got at least an hour of competitive football into them this week in a match situation.

"We've got through the week relatively unscathed, apart from a couple of little niggles.

"At the start of the week that's what we were looking to do - push the players as hard as they can go, and make sure they're ready to go again next week.

"We stood off initially and, once we got settled, we started to play like we can do.

"To see the players respond to what we were telling them changed the flow of the game and was pleasing.

"That match was their third session today. They've been through a tough week.

"I saw the players taking on board things we've worked on through the week, which was excellent.

"We want to put a structure in place where it maximises the players' potential however we play. Getting attacking players on the pitch into good areas.

"This week has been fantastic for me and my staff, because they have worked ever so hard in every session. They're a determined group of lads who know all this work is vital at this stage of the season to make sure we're ready when the big kick-off comes.

"We will fly home on Saturday morning and will then get the lads ready for the Hull game next week."
